Memory, Nationalism and Conflict in Post-Soviet Eastern Europe

New geographies were created in the aftermath of the Second World War with the formation of NATO and Warsaw Pact. The break-up of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war saw the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and a radically changed geo-political situation in Eastern Europe. This short course examines the territorial disputes between Russia and Ukraine and the political divisions that threaten to fracture Ukraine. The role of Ukrainian national memory and the difficulty of reconciling conflicting narratives of national history are discussed.

November 18

The treaty of Versailles, irredentism and Nazi Doctrines, WWII and its aftermath

November 25

Ukrainian nationalism and Soviet internationalism: the roots of the present crisis.

December 2
